When you purchase an image from photonewzealand, you do not purchase the copyright of the image. i.e. you do not own the image.
You purchase the right to use the image. In all cases, unless you specifically request and pay for exclusive use of an image, other companies are also able to purchase the right to use the same image.
A Royalty Free (RF) image can be used indefinitely after paying a one-time licence fee, based upon the size of file required. You do not have to pay a licence fee for each usage or for a specified duration.
Once purchased, RF images can be used indefinitely by the end user and for any type of use (subject to prohibited uses as shown in our Terms and Conditions).
ADVANTAGES:
- Easy one-time pricing, use images for as long as you like.
- Fee based on file size required. Only pay for what you need.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Anyone else can use the same or similar image(s). No control is kept on who is using images.
- Limited options to purchase Exclusive Use of image(s).
A Rights Managed (RM) image can be purchased (licensed) for a specific use, duration and territory with fees increasing the broader the use and/or the longer the duration and/or the wider the territory.
Careful control is maintained over who is using an image at all times so that competing businesses do not end up using the same or a similar image.
Uses can be very specific (e.g. print only) or very broad (e.g. All Advertisin) and durations range from 1 week to 5 years.
Once licensed, if you wants to use the image for other uses or for a longer duration, additional licenses need to be purchased.
ADVANTAGES:
- We will be able to tell you if an image has been used in the past and where*. You can request this service before deciding to use an image to make sure your client will be happy.
- You can prevent competitors from using the same image by purchasing an exclusive licence.
- RM images collections are generally of higher quality and contain images that are more "unique".
DISADVANTAGES:
- Images can only be used according to the licence terms, including a set duration.
You may be able to purchase exclusive use of images, subject to availability and clearance.
Exclusive use means you can prevent other companies from using the same (or a similar) image either in the End Users industry or in all industries, either in 1 territory or all territories. Exclusive use of an image incurs an additional cost (on top of the license fee) and is custom quoted (i.e. cannot be purchased online)
We currently offer the following exclusive use options:
- 1 industry, 1 territory
- 1 industry, worldwide
- All industries, 1 territory
- All industries, worldwide.
Please contact us if you have any questions about exclusive licensing.
